I found the book quite useful but Zhots had problems with the quality of the images. The only downside is black and white screencaps from movies, it is not clear why they were not published in color. In this engagingly written book, with helpful illustrations from actual films, Chris Kenworthy goes a long way towards bridging this knowledge gap. He directed a feature film, along with many music videos and commercial projects.

Cinematography for Directors by: Granted, some of the shots filmed for the book are somewhat rough, and you can’t help but wish you could also see the actual film clips being discussed, but it all works and definitely helps you see the different options, where the camera is, how the actors move, etc. I liked that it even gave suggestions on which lens to use for the different shots. Look at it in the store or check it out from the library, but don’t buy it.

Overall, this book points toward some interesting technique, but doesn’t do enough to make sense of them; it mostly wastes its own, strangely-shaped space.
